Big Sleep, The

by Raymond Chandler

8/10 (Forced analogies, casual misogyny, light)

Philip Marlowe is just cool.  Pretty much everything he does is cool, and everything he says, and everything he thinks.  It’s cool how tough he is but also how he slips that poetic touch into his cool narrator’s voice, noticing all those pretty details about his surroundings.  Poetry + Tough = Cool.  I read it in two days.  Does he force the occasional analogy?  Sure, but his coolness makes up for it.  Opening and closing ‘graphs are worth the price of admission by themselves.  I read ’em out loud to my wife that’s how much I loved ’em.  She just laughed and called me a nerd.
